The Collection
The works displayed in VMAD have been promised  (as a permanent gift or long term loan) to the University. This means that if a permanent “brick and mortar” museum were to be built in the future these works have already been pledged to it.  It is hoped that as VMAD becomes publicized more works will be added to the collection. At the present time the collections consist of a significant number of objects from West and Central Africa and a collection of hundreds of items documenting baseball’s Negro Leagues in the United States. The entire collection has been donated by faculty and staff of the University. No state or federal monies have been spent on the project.
African Art  - This collection focuses on Western and Central Africa (were most African American scan trace their ancestry) and contains hundreds of objects including include mask, figures and other artifacts. There are significant holdings from many ethnic groups including the Fang,  Songye, Kota, Senufo, Dogon, Bamana and Chokwe.
Negro League - This collection honors the amazing athletes who played baseball between 1880 and 1947 but were barred from the major leagues because of the color of their skin. Vintage memorabilia, autographs, baseball cards all contribute to a better understanding of these legends and the way America was.
Contemporary Art - The contemporary collection features work by some of America's finest artists with an emphasis on African American artists.
