The Attie (sometimes referred to as Akye) of the southern Ivory Coast (population 50,000) are members of the Akan who’s centralized government rose to power in the 13th century. They are farmers and supplement their diet with fish caught along the coast.
Like their Baule neighbors, the Attie carve figures to embody spirits so that they can be placated. The VMAD example is particularly large but demonstrates the traditional Attie use of inset round pegs as ornamentation.
